Chua ChunLeng

As the founder of King George’s Music Academy (KGMA), Chua Chun Leng views music not just as a skill to be mastered, but as a "serenity of the heart and melody of the soul." His philosophy is rooted in the belief that while technical accuracy matters, playing without passion is "unforgivable." Below is a writeup on the academy, written from the perspective of its founder, Chua Chun Leng. A Note from the Founder: The Heartbeat of KGMA When I founded King George’s Music Academy in 2015, I didn’t just want to build another school with polished floors and rows of instruments. I wanted to create a sanctuary where the "Integrated Curriculum" meets the individual spirit. Having spent over a decade immersed in the world of percussion and performance, I’ve realized that a drumbeat is only as good as the heart behind it. 1. We Don’t Just Teach; We Coach Artists At KGMA, we move beyond the traditional student-teacher hierarchy. We see ourselves as coaches. My goal has always been to help aspiring artists find their unique voice. Whether a student is a "prodigy" with raw natural talent or an "artisan" who relies on the 99% perspiration rule, we meet them where they are. We utilize the VARK Model to ensure we aren’t just "teaching at" people: • Visual: For those who need to see the score and the sight-reading. • Aural: For the students who learn by ear and heartbeat. • Read/Write: For the analytical minds who crave the theory. • Kinesthetic: For those who need to feel the sticks in their hands and the vibration of the drums. 2. The "Foundations" vs. "Testaments" Philosophy I often tell parents and students that you shouldn't choose a music school based on its "foundations"—the location, the fancy decor, or the price. While we pride ourselves on being a premier school near Lavender MRT, those are just basics. Instead, look at the Testaments: the actual results of our students. To me, our students are our walking ambassadors. When I see our drum students achieve 100% exam distinction or watch a student I coached—like Nurul, a brave blind girl who learned to master the drums—overcome their barriers, that is the true testament of KGMA. 3. More Than Just Notes on a Page I’ve always believed that music is a lifelong language. It’s why we’ve branched out into everything from Classical Grandmaster piano tracks to Contemporary "Play & Sing" sessions for guitar and vocals. During the difficult periods of the 2020 Circuit Breaker, we didn't just stop. We pivoted to high-quality online learning because the "symphony of life" shouldn't pause for a pandemic. We ensured our teachers had the right audio gear and maintained our standards because, at KGMA, the quality of education is non-negotiable. 4. My Personal Vow My specialty is the drums, and I’ve spent my life mastering the art of the beat. But my deeper mission is to give every child and adult that "little push" they need. I believe every person has music in them; they just need someone to believe in their craft. At King George’s Music Academy, we aren't just teaching you how to play an instrument—we’re teaching you how to speak a language that unveils the heart and dances the spirit.
